About journalism training in Kenya

I welcome discussions, features and articles on Kenyan journalism. Let's keep the passion about this profession.

Journalism training in Kenya can be best described as one of the fastest growing in the continent. Over the past few years, journalism education and training has expanded beyond Nairobi. Initially after independence, we had only one training institution offering mass communication courses under the Ministry of Information and Communication. The pioneer Kenya Institute of Mass Communication still remains one of the  centres of excellence in offering mass communication, at certificate, diploma and most recently degree levels(the degree is in collaboration with the university of  Nairobi.
However, there are new entrants in the training field. The latest kid on the bloc is Multi media university college, a constituent of Jomo Kenyatta University college. The college offers best diploma and degree courses. Available are degree courses in Film & Animation as well as in Mass Communication Studies.

Other colleges which provide journalism and mass communication education in Kenya include;
The University of Nairobi, Moi University, Maseno University, Daystar University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology. Kenyatta University offers degree programs in Film & Theatre Studies. Other universities include St Paul Theological college, Africa Nazarene University and Presbyterian University.
Beside the universities, several public and private middle level colleges also offer journalism and media studies. Notable among them is the East Africa School of Media studies, Kenya Polytechnic among others.
The positive development is that the field is open to scholars and communication researchers. Secondly, parents and students have a rich menu of courses to select.
As a student of journalism, this is your forum, get your ideas published for free. As a researcher, get on board and post quick opinion questions. As a teacher, interact with your students.
